I recieved a few questions regarding the defensive pen I mentioned in last month's article. This is not a regular pen, but one that has been specially designed as a self defense tool. I recommend one from http://www.mil-tac.com/ because that's what I own, but I know Smith & Wesson makes one that is more economical.
Question: I was recently asked if the chamber should be empty when carrying a pistol for self defense.
Short Answer: NO!!!!
Long Answer: This would require you to draw AND rack the slide prior to shooting. Not only does this increase your chance of errors in gun presentation, but it will almost DOUBLE your draw time. In additon, what if an altercation escalates quickly and you are holding off the attacker with your other hand? What if you are holding your child or grandchild in that arm? There are some other options to rack the slide with one hand, but they require advanced traning and all waste valuable time. If you follow the 4 basic rules of safety, there is no reason not to have a round in the chamber.
1) The Gun Is Always Loaded!
2) Never Point A Gun At Something You're Not Prepared To Destroy
3) Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It!
4) Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On Target!
Remember that when it comes to self defense...Only Shoot as a LAST RESORT!
